Who gets a free NHS eye test?

In England, a free NHS eye test is available if you’re in an eligible group and the test is clinically necessary. The main groups are:

How much does an eye test cost in Otley?

How often should I have my eyes tested?

The NHS recommends an eye test every 2 years for most people. Your optometrist may advise more frequent tests, for example if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or if you’re a child whose eyes are still developing (NHS).

Do I have to buy my glasses where I have my eye test?

No. After your eye test you’re legally entitled to a copy of your prescription, and you can buy glasses or contact lenses wherever you like (NHS). We’re always happy to help you choose, but there’s no obligation.

What should I do if I have a sudden eye problem?

Don’t wait for a routine appointment. Our questionnaire isn’t monitored for emergencies. If you’re registered with a Leeds GP, call the NHS Leeds Community Urgent Eye Care Service (CUES) on 030 333 00 280, or call NHS 111.
